Celtic manager Martin O'Neill is still hoping to bring Belgian defender Joos Valgaeren and other new signings to Parkhead in the next couple of weeks.

The former Leicester manager has targeted a number of players since taking control in the summer but has so far managed to add only striker Chris Sutton's name to the weak squad he inherited.

O'Neill has made JC Roda a reported £3.5 million offer for Valgaeren and admitted last week to making a bid for Leicester midfielder Neil Lennon.

But O'Neill is still waiting for the go-ahead with just six days left to go before the new season starts and with pressure mounting after the disappointing 4-2 friendly defeat to Bordeaux on Saturday.

He is still optimistic of some positive news on the transfer front and is refusing to press the panic button. "There is no new news at the moment regarding Valgaeren," said O'Neill. "There's been nothing since Saturday afternoon anyway.

"There is no noon deadline, and I am still optimistic on a number of fronts. But there is nothing concrete at the moment. I am hopeful of bringing players in and I have been hopeful for a week or two, but it's not easy.

"Quick fixes I could do tomorrow morning, but that's not something I was looking at. I wanted people in here close enough to the start so that they would be involved throughout the season."

The Celtic manager also admitted he would like to have Leicester coaching duo John Robertson and Steve Walford by his side again. However, he indicated the chances of the trio reuniting at Parkhead are small, with Leicester determined to hang on to them. 99751683

Meanwhile, Manchester United goalkeeper Raimond van der Gouw admits he has been flattered by Rangers' interest in him.

But the 37-year-old is waiting to see what the future holds for him at Old Trafford under Alex Ferguson before deciding to leave the English champions.

The Dutchman's current contract at United ends next summer, and he is waiting to hear if the club are prepared to offer him an extension.

"My age doesn't matter. But it is up to the boss, and most of the managers are thinking long-term. I have to accept that I'm not 20 any more."

Van der Gouw has made just a handful of appearances since his move from Vitesse Arnhem in 1996. He could never find his way into the Old Trafford first team because of the form of then number one Peter Schmeichel.

The Danish international left the club last summer for Sporting Lisbon, and Ferguson replaced him with Mark Bosnich and then Massimo Taibi. The Italian never found his feet at the club, while Bosnich's position is seriously threatened by the arrival of French World Cup and Euro 2000 winner Fabien Barthez.

The arrival of Barthez has also placed a massive question mark over van der Gouw's future at the club, and Ibrox manager Dick Advocaat needs cover for Stefan Klos.
