Tottenham yesterday agreed £5.5 million fee with Manchester United for the signature of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and are hoping to meet the player to discuss personal terms next week. However, they are likely to face stiff competition from Everton, who had asked to be kept informed of developments and are keen to sign a forward after Parma informed them the versatile Mario Stanic is no longer for sale.
The 25-year-old Solskjaer has played 55 league games for United, scoring 23 goals. Although he is contracted at Old Trafford until 2004 and has publicly declared his wish to see it through, he has slipped down the pecking order after the arrival of Dwight Yorke. If the Norwegian agrees to move, it would represent good business for United, who bought him from Molde for £1.1 million in June 1996.
John Sheridan will not be signing for Huddersfield after a week's trial at the McAlpine Stadium. The Republic of Ireland midfielder was released by Bolton at the end of last season.
UEFA has agreed to review plans for a European Super League. The media company, Media Partners, which is behind moves to form the new competition, made a presentation to UEFA yesterday in Geneva. UEFA said it would examine the proposal in consultation with the various national associations.
