Kaltra 1-13 Castlerea/St Kevin's 1-7 Galway champions Caltra saw off the challenge of Castlerea St Kevin's in Roscommon yesterday to progress to the Connacht club football final.The star of the show for the visiting side and their fans in a 3,500 crowd was teenager Micheál Meehan, who scored 1-7. Castlerea St Kevin's were playing without their injured captain, Niall Finnegan.
Meehan scored his goal in the 14th minute after receiving a pass from midfielder John Galvin.
Caltra corner back Jarlath Murray was dismissed in the 37th minute following an altercation with Gerard Heneghan who was yellow carded.
Caltra led 1-6 to 1-4 at half-time after playing against the wind with Heneghan grabbing Castlerea's goal in the 26th minute. But Caltra were unperturbed by their numerical disadvantage and wore down their opponents in the second half.
Castlerea's three points in the second half came through Heneghan, all from placed balls. The Roscommon side also made some critical errors after the break which were to be instrumental in Caltra's victory
Goalkeeper Geoffrey Claffey allowed the ball to cross the line for a 45 which Micheál Meehan converted to put Caltra 1-10 to 1-6 up inthe 54th minute. After that, Nigel Dineen failed to point a 30-metre free from in front of the posts.
Shortly before that, the referee disallowed a Castlerea "goal" by Heneghan after Dineen had set him up from a free.
