Limerick SHC Final: Patrickswell 1-13 Adare 0-14 Supersub John McDermott put his name to the vital goal that gave Patrickswell their 17th Limerick senior hurling title and denied neighbours Adare of a hat-trick, before a crowd of 7,000 at the Gaelic Grounds.
Adare had clawed their way back from a five-point deficit, after just seven minutes, to push ahead at 0-10 to 0-9, and having at last found their rhythm and with the wind behind them, they scented victory.
However, McDermott spoiled the party after veteran Gary Kirby played the ball into his path. Goalkeeper Tim Houlihan was caught in two minds, and McDermott tapped it into an unguarded net.
Seconds later Ciarán Carey compounded their problems with a marvellous point, and with 14 minutes left on the clock "The Well" simply shut up shop to give Kirby his 10th medal, one fewer than fellow raider Anthony Carmody.
The 2002 champions endured a nightmare start with Kirby (2), Ciarán Carey and the O'Grady brothers Declan and Paul pointing.
But Conor Fitzgerald grabbed six points before the break. And Stephen Lavin, Conor Murphy, Brendan Heffernan and Fitzgerald added further points after it to put Adare ahead.
The Well, however, stepped up their game, Paul O'Grady posting points from two 65s and McDermott's wonder strike finally ending the Adare dream.
