McCauleys give solid displays

CYCLING: Husband and wife duo Richie and Jenny McCauley rode solidly in the marathon world mountainbike championships in Lillehammer, Norway, on Saturday.

Richie McCauley placed 40th out of 128 finishers in the 116-kilometre elite men's race, crossing the line 15 minutes and 55 seconds behind Swiss winner Thomas Frischknecht. Jenny McCauley was 16th out of 37 finishers in the women's race. Gold went to Norwegian Gunn-Rita Dahle.

At home, a number of riders came away with gold medals at the end of the Terry Dolan/Cyclelogical national track championships in Sundrive Road over the weekend.

Ray Clarke (Worldwide Cycles) won the individual pursuit, while Keith Bannan (Bua Sports/The Bagel Bar) and his team-mate Paul Doyle took the sprint and one-kilometre time-trial title, respectively.

Kate Rudd (Orwell - Dundrum SC) raced to double gold in winning the women's sprint and the 500-metre time-trial, while Louise Moriarty (Moving Ladies) took the women's pursuit.

Junior rider Pat Clark (Castlebar CC) took two gold medals, winning the 500-metre time trial and the junior sprint. Urban Monks (Bray Wheelers) was quickest in the pursuit.

The points race was postponed until Wednesday due to rain.

Giant Asia professional David McCann finished equal first in the Cycling Ireland Classic League, moving level with Rory Wyley in the Atlantic Hotel Sheeffrey Grand Prix yesterday.
