TEXAN teenager Kelli Kuehne yesterday joined a select band of golfers to have held both the British and American Women's Open Amateur golf titles at the same time.

In blustery conditions at Royal Liverpool the 19 year old student from Dallas lifted the British crown when she defeated 21 year old Welsh international Rebecca Morgan by five and three in the 18 hole final.

Kuehne gave a brilliant display particularly on the outward half when she birdied four out of five holes from the fifth to go from all square to four up. During that spell she rattled in a 40 footer for a birdie two at the seventh.

"I really turned into a birdie machine today," said Kuehne. "I was hitting the ball great and the putts were good. It would have been very difficult to have beaten golf like that."

Kuehne, who defends her American title next month, earlier pipped Frenchwoman Sonia Bauer on the home green at the end of a match in which never more than a hole had separated the players.

Morgan who exceeded all expectations in getting so far was a four and two winner over Curtis Cup golfer Elaine Ratcliffe in the semifinal.

. Ennis's Trica Mangan won her first round match against Sweden's Karolina Andersson by three and two in the British Women's Championship at Hoylake last Friday and not as reported on Saturday. Mangan then lost to Italy's S Sandolo in the next round.
