Juventus 2 Galatasaray 1: A 73rd-minute goal from defender Ciro Ferrara gave last season's beaten finalists Juventus a 2-1 home win over Turkey's Galatasaray in Group D.

Although Alessandro Del Piero put Juventus ahead in the fifth minute, Juve struggled after Hakan Sukur brought Galatasaray level with a 19th-minute header. But Del Piero set up the winner with defender Ferrara left unattended.

A late penalty from striker Darko Kovacevic gave Real Sociedad a 1-0 win over Olympiakos in the other Group D match in San Sebastian.

Olympique Lyon ended Anderlecht's unbeaten run this season with a controversial penalty for the only goal of their opening Group A clash in Lyon. Brazilian midfielder Juninho Pernambucano put away the spot-kick after 26 minutes.

AEK Athens earned a late 1-1 home draw against Deportivo La Coruna in Group C courtesy of an 86th-minute Vassilis Tsiartas strike. Deportivo had taken advantage of the Greeks' unsettled back-line with Walter Pandiani first to a Victor Sanchez corner to head in a corner in the 12th minute.

AS Monaco got their campaign off to the perfect start as they beat PSV Eindhoven 2-1 in Group C. The French side went in front on 31 minutes through Fernando Morientes and Edouard Cisse doubled their lead after 56 minutes before Wilfred Bouma pulled a goal back for the home side.

Substitute striker Diogo Rincon scored twice in the final seven minutes to give Dynamo Kiev a 2-0 home win over Lokomotiv Moscow in Group B.
