Two double bills will dominate the Dublin hockey programme next Saturday when not only will Corinthians and Three Rock Rovers be hosts to Pembroke Wanderers and Harlequins, respectively, in the Irish Senior Cup, they will be entertaining two Ulster sides in Junior Cup replays.

This is a result of the quarterfinal ties in which Corinthians II and Three Rock II, saved by Stephen Pim and William Haughton, gained 1-1 draws against Cookstown II and Mossley II. Cork C of I's second XI, notably, beat Lisnagarvey II, 2-1, to go straight through to the semi-finals, in which they are joined by Annadale II.

As regards, the build-up for the senior quarter-finals, Pembroke, with an 8-0 defeat of out-of shape YMCA, had a less strenuous Leinster league outing on Saturday than Corinthians. The White church side were held scoreless by Monkstown in the first half before they made the most of their breaks after the interval to win 4-1.

In this repeat of their third-round cup meeting, Corinthians' Australian element was emphasised by a full-press midfield performance by Paul Armitage, who opened the scoring, if fortuitously. He had industrious support from Duncan McCleary, who was making a further appearance to establish his bona fide credentials.

Paul McAndrew, Andrew Chambers and Brian Groves were prominent in the Monkstown resistance, with David Jenkins giving them hope with an equaliser before the home side quickly pulled ahead again through Tom Connell. Armitage (penalty stroke) and Colin Stewart - finally allowed space - completed the tally.

Two up against YMCA within a couple of minutes, Pembroke might have preferred a more testing afternoon. Glenanne, the only threat to their league title, also won without trouble, 5-1, against Trinity, with Stephen Butler registering his 40th goal of the season. UCD's 5-3 flamboyant defeat of Railway Union, featured by an admirable reverse-stick goal by Martin Lynch when it was 3-3, means both universities are left in a fourway tussle with Monkstown and YMCA for first-division survival. In a mid-table game strangely without prestige, Three Rock recovered from an early deficit to beat Avoca 2-1. It is a sign of the times that notable senior figures from both teams will not be available for Leinster this term. Indeed, Colin Hade (51 caps) feels that he can no longer keep up the commitment to play for Ireland.
