A 53rd minute goal from Southampton sub Neil Heaney gave the Premiership side a hard earned win over Cork City at Temple Hill last night.
In a far from inspiring game Southampton's stars failed to impress and it fell to Heaney to save their reputation.
A delightful ball from Le Tissier found the City defence in disarray and Heaney reacted quickest to slip the ball past the advancing O'Shea.
"It was a useful workout for us," said Graeme Souness. "We have only trained for five days and I am happy with the effort shown."
