Former Down star Liam Austin celebrated his first competitive win as Cavan team manager when the Breffni county ended a losing league run at Breffni Park yesterday. Wexford produced early evidence that they might be a difficult hurdle to surmount when after nine minutes they led by 1-3 to 0-1, the goal coming from Scott Doran.
Almost immediately, Cavan hit back with a goal from Peter Reilly and when newcomer Mark Leddy scored the second goal in the 18th minute the signs were good. By half-time Cavan led by 2-7 to 1-6, despite playing against the strong breeze. The game was over as a contest by the end of the third quarter when Mark Leddy scored his second goal.
The fourth goal, from Fintan Cahill seven minutes from the end, was merely the icing on the cake for the home team.
It wasn't Wexford's day, as Leigh O'Brien missed from the penalty spot six minutes from the end.
