Drogheda United's under-21 team manager, John Carroll, takes temporary charge of the club's senior side for tonight's Premier Division match at home to Waterford United following the surprise sacking of Harry McCue on Tuesday.

Drogheda have lost their last four league games but McCue was allowed to sign two new players, Mustafa Eraydin and Barry Molloy, before Sunday's transfer deadline while the timing of his dismissal is hardly ideal ahead of Friday-week's FAI Cup clash with Bohemians.

"I think it's a bit of a shock to everybody," said team captain, Aidan Lynch. "I'm very surprised by it. Training on Monday night was business as usual. We've just signed a couple of players and we have the cup game coming up."

UCD manager Paul Doolin has emerged as a favourite to fill the vacancy while other candidates may include Roddy Collins, Noel King, Damien Richardson and Monaghan United boss Bobby Browne.
