Scott Barron, Ireland's number one tennis player, attained what must rank as a career highlight when he reached two finals in the third week of the Ecquador-Peru satellite circuit. Five successive days of competition in excessive temperatures saw him reach the final of the men's singles, where he went out in straight sets to Argentinian Augustin Calleri, 6-2 6-2. Earlier, he had beaten Patricia Donatoi of Argentina, Georgio Rodrigues of Uruguay, Carlos Custodio of Brazil and number two seed Aramburi of Peru.
Partnering Jeff Coetzee of South Africa, Barron won the doubles title, beating Rodrigez and Critez of Paraguay.
Meanwhile, the Home Countries internationals fixed for Nottingham this weekend have been cancelled. It is doubtful if an alternative date will be arranged.
