SOCCER:THE Republic of Ireland's European Championship qualifier against Andorra on Friday, October 7th now looks virtually certain to be played in Barcelona following a request by the host association to move the game there, writes EMMET MALONE.

The Andorrans have sought permission from Uefa for the switch on the basis of estimates for travelling Irish fans provided by the FAI, with larger numbers expected to make the journey on the basis of Ireland’s strong showing in the group.

Uefa must now ensure the Spanish federation has no objections to the game being staged there but as Andorra fairly regularly play there and Spain are in Prague that night, there is not expected to be any problem. Espanyol’s stadium would appear to be the most likely venue.
