Madam, - I read with a mixture of disbelief and frustration that "new car retail prices here are 31 per cent higher than the euro zone average" (Hard Shoulder, Motors, September 17th).

How can this Government (like its predecessors) continue to rip off the Irish motorist without widespread protests?

Don't we pay enough in road tax for generally inferior roads? Wasn't membership of the EU meant to bring equality of pricing in the euro zone? Why is this not an issue at every election?

Our neighbours across the border pay about £4,000 sterling less than we do on the average family car - and this at a time when we're being squeezed by the NCT to keep our aging cars in drivable condition!
