Madam, - How sad that many of the cow sculptures scattered throughout Dublin have had to be taken off the streets after being vandalised (The Irish Times July 17th). They provided a curious and amusing spectacle for passers-by.
But we should not be surprised. These exhibits join a long, sad list including the beautiful new National Gallery Building, defaced within days of opening, and the wonderful civic developments on the north and south quays which have become virtual no-go areas.
What is it about some citizens of this city that they feel the need to damage, litter and deface everything, thereby depriving the vast majority of their fellow citizens of some of the pleasures this city can offer? Are they so lacking in self-esteem? Is it not time we got over this cancerous inferiority complex and started taking some pride in ourselves? - Yours, etc.,
