Madam, - I refer to Tom Humphries's Locker Room piece of May 12th in which he writes that in the past camogie was seen as something "for big girls with fat ankles to do between Macra dances". I found these comments extremely inappropriate and I know a number of female Macra na Feirme members found them to be offensive.

Mr Humphries's inference that Macra na Feirme is a backward organisation is off the mark. Our organisation caters for members between the ages of 17 and 35 and our activities reflect the needs and desires of this age-group. Indeed, GAA clubs around the country have benefited hugely from current and former Macra members who have developed their leadership and meeting skills in Macra na Feirme.

Finally, Mr Humphries laments the fact that "we don't cover enough girls sports on Monday mornings. . .we don't view women as a market for sport". Can I suggest this his derogatory remarks in the piece do little to rectify the situation? - Yours, etc.,

THOMAS HONNER, National President, Macra na Feirme, Irish Farm Centre, Dublin 12.
