Sir, - I would like to fully support the views expressed by Peter Somerville Large (May 16th) in relation to Three Castle Head in west Cork. I was lucky enough to have been shown Three Castle Head two years ago by friends who live locally. On the advice of the friends we ignored the threatening signs and we ignored the challenge of a gentleman whom I assume was the owner. I was very glad we did. Three Castle Head is a truly stunning sight, certainly one of the most beautiful sights that I have ever seen in Ireland.
It is shameful that a real national treasure is now effectively closed off to the public. The owner may very well have some genuine concerns in relation to insurance claims or public liability; if so perhaps legislative or other changes should be considered by the incoming Government to solve this problem and similar problems elsewhere. If necessary, drastic actions such as compulsory purchase orders should be considered. Ireland cannot afford the luxury of having its natural beauty enjoyed only by a privileged few.
