Madam, - Congratulations to your Africa Correspondent, Declan Walsh, for sticking with the story of the theft of natural resources in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by individuals close to the governments of both Rwanda and Uganda and certain private companies (October 27th).

The reluctance of the UN to release the full details of its report into this wholesale theft and rape of the Congo to protect the reputations of those in positions of power and others in private companies who are profiting from this behaviour is an appalling dereliction of duty and tantamount to complicity in war crimes.

If the UN is to retain any credibility it must release immediately all of its panel's findings and name those individuals and companies that they allege are involved in or benefiting from this illegal behaviour which has caused so much misery, suffering and death for so many Congolese people.

It is a sad day when the UN is more concerned with protecting the reputations of suspected thieves and murderers than protecting the lives of innocent people. - Yours, etc.,
