Sir, - On reading Kevin O'Sullivans article (May 5th) regarding the decline in lobster stocks in Ireland, it is known that a seal's habitat is richly infested with lobster breeding grounds.
The reason for this is that seals only consume part of a fish at one time, leaving the remains to be buried under the sea for a later stage. This food becomes a bonus for the lobster, and they will use such shore inlets, especially with gravelled sea beds, as their breeding grounds. It is known that, where fishermen make seals extinct from, their fishing grounds, after a while lobsters also become extinct. - Yours, etc.,
