Madam, - Thank you for the generous Editorial on Pope Paul II (October 17th) and your acknowledgement of him as one of the great world leaders of our time.

It is a pity, however, that such weight is given to Hans Kung's criticism of the Pope. He was given every opportunity to fall into line on Church teaching but refused to do so.

Hasn't the Pope been proved right in his opposition to abortion, divorce and contraception (with the contraceptive mentality leading to some now considering pregnancy the worst fate to befall a woman), and with our first-world society reflecting the subsequent fallout? The Pope has consistently espoused life in all its fullness with reasoning based on the teaching of Christ but recognising that he is putting the ideal before us. Unfortunately, we all fall far short of this, but let us acknowledge our weakness and not blame the messenger.

The Pope is also a powerful witness for the wisdom and contribution of the elderly and infirm in an era when many regard them as useless.
