Madam, - Congratulations to The Irish Times and Daniel Meltzer on speaking out about the abuse of our space by mobile phone users (October 25th). One paragraph from Mr Meltzer's article sums it up beautifully and I quote "a single mobile phone talker virtually seizes and occupies a public communal space and instantly converts into his or her own".

While sitting on the bus or train, walking the aisles of the supermarket, in dressing rooms at the swimming pool (waterproof models may not yet be available - so we are spared the nuisance while in or swimming lanes), standing in queues I feel I have been besieged by them. On one occasion the man sharing the seat with me on the train carried on business transactions for two hours - the only interruption to the conversation being while he operated his lap top computer.

Surely like the provision of "No Smoking" carriages on our trains similar provisions will have to be made so that we can enjoy our trip in a "mobile phone-free" carriage.
