Madam, - In 1992, the then President of the EU Commission Mr. Jacque Delors, stated that "if in the next 10 years we haven't managed to give a soul to Europe, to give it spirituality and meaning the game will be up".

Mr. Delors was referring to the fact that if the "European Project" was to survive it would have to offer its citizens something other than legal and economic know-how. The Union would have to become focused on the respect for both human rights and cultural diversity.

The fact that the European Union is now introducing proposals that will allow not just experimentation on human embryos but will actually financially support such experimentation, suggests that the European Union has failed in this regard.

Most countries in the world are currently introducing regulations that will in some way or another prohibit such experimentation.

Yet the EU is now intent on funding such repulsive activities despite its apparent contravention of international human rights law.

Further, and many would say to help solve the "immigration problem" from developing countries, the EU through its funding of the UNFPA and Marie Stopes International is now funding coercive population control programs in developing countries.

It would be difficult to believe that this is the EU that Mr Delors envisaged. The question that must be now asked of the EU is whether the "game is up"? - Yours, etc.,
