Sir, The destruction of Tailteann is both a tragedy and a disgrace. That its importance as a cultural symbol was appreciated by previous generations is well illustrated by the fact that the Meath poet Uilliam Bui Mac Giolla Chiarain addressed it in a poem beginning, "A Thailteann na mbrat", linking its fortunes with those of his people.
In view of Tailteann's having by that time passed out of native possession, the poet concludes, significantly perhaps, by execrating the famous site: "Ach fuagraim ort plaigh, gruaim agus grain." Prophetic words, indeed, in the light of recent developments! - Yours etc.,
