Madam, - It is precisely because of the attitude expressed by Prof Eamon O'Dwyer (November 6th) that I feel the Irish taxpayer should foot the bill for compensation to victims of child abuse in Christian Brothers institutions.
My late husband suffered appalling abuse and torture in a Dublin city centre Christian Brothers school. He used to say that until the people who were not affected by abuse learnt and truly believed the extent of abuse that had taken place, then no true redress would ever be possible.
There were many boys in Christian Brothers' schools as fortunate and privileged as Professor O'Dwyer. It was through no fault of his own that my husband was not one of them. - Yours, etc.,
GABRIELLE LOWE, Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England.
