Sir, – Was Pól Ó Cionsalígh (August 24th) unaware that the tall ships event was taking place? I have little interest in the event myself, but the advance publicity has been quite comprehensive. It is not the organisers’ fault that people chose to ignore the notices of road closures, and failed to give themselves extra time to reach their destination. I witnessed one woman drive down the wrong side of the road on Seville Place before entering the IFSC – obviously some emergency in the office needed her urgent attention.

There is no accountability in question here, other than that of those who persist in clogging our streets with car traffic every weekday. I applaud Mr Ó Cionsalígh for taking the bus – perhaps if more people had made this decision, or cycled or walked, he wouldn’t have suffered such a delay. My own two-wheeled commute took the same time as always. – Yours, etc,
