Sir, - As we approach the well-advertised transfer to the euro, it is with disgust that I have noticed over the past few months a sharp rise in everyday prices.
Both retailers and service providers seem to be using the advent of this new currency as a cover for blatant increases.
The general public was promised that this introduction would be a "simple" metamorphosis from punt to euro with no associated price increases. However, these same politicians sit idly by while shops, pubs, cinemas and other consumer services increases their prices. What used to cost £2 now costs £2.40, so that it translates to a simple €2.99.
While retailers and service providers are cashing in on the Euro changeover, our trusty Government has done nothing to stop it. Why? With these price increases the change is definitely no longer in our pocket. - Yours, etc.,
Alex Horstmann, Cork.
