Madam, - I refer to Edel Morgan's report (Property, September 18th on An Bord Pleanála's decision to refuse permission for the current (third) proposal to redevelop Stillorgan Shopping Centre.
The developers involved, Treasury Holdings, are no doubt disappointed with the outcome of what can only be described as a thorough, fair and meticulous appeal process by An Bord Pleanála.
Two previous schemes were refused on similar grounds.
But the remarks made by the company's Joint Managing Director, Richard Barrett, should not go unchallenged. Attacking the integrity of An Bord Pleanála and suggesting that it was "maverick and unpredictable" demonstrates the thundering arrogance of one of Ireland's wealthiest developers. I suggest Mr Barrett reads the inspector's report with his eyes wide open and in the meantime forswears amy petulant ranting to the press.
The conclusions of this report are fairly straightforward. It states the 2002 proposal put forward by Treasury is, like the previous 1999 scheme, much too large for the catchment area it purports to serve.
Every consideration was given to Treasury Holdings along with its army of professional consultants to prove its case to the contrary, but it failed to do so.- Yours, etc.,
SANDRA FENNER, Stillorgan District Community and Residents' Alliance, Stillorgan, Co Dublin.
