Madam, - We are writing on behalf of the Association of Teachers of Home Economics to express our concern about the recent announcement by Mr Noel Dempsey regarding the closure of St Catherine's College of Education.
St Catherine's has a long and proud tradition in training Home Economics teachers. Over the past 90 years, thousands have gained qualifications there and they have educated and enriched the lives of many others. St Catherine's was founded by the Dominican Sisters in 1910. It was their vision and foresight that fostered this innovative and progressive college of education.
It continues to maintain its tradition and is a renowned college of excellence in Home Economics. The college has made important links with IFHE (International Federation of Home Economics) over many years, with the involvement of staff in research and development of Home Economics.
It has also been a great support to the ATHE. Its location enables students from the south and east of the country to pursue a career in Home Economics. The closure of St Catherine's limits the choice of colleges for Home Economics teacher education and this will lead to a reduction in the number of qualified Home Economics teachers.
In view of the small numbers qualifying each year, it is our opinion that St Catherine's College of Education should continue to be a centre of excellence for Home Economics teacher education.
The recent refurbishment of the college, which cost €1.4 million, enables it to offer state-of-the-art facilities to students. Why close it? - Yours, etc.,
KATHLEEN GEANEY, Chairperson, ATHE, MARY DUNLEA,
Secretary, South Douglas Road, Cork.
