Sir, - I take offence at your paper continually referring to asylum-seekers as "refugees". People who arrive in the State and lodge asylum claims are "asylum-seekers".
By referring to these people as "refugees" you are giving two false impressions: firstly, that these people's claims have already been ratified by the State; and secondly, that these people are all fleeing from war-torn strife and terror.
This is blatantly not true. Many are coming from Romania, Poland and Nigeria. These, and many other countries from which applicants come, are far from war-torn lands.
It is up to our Government to accept or reject applicants on the basis of them being "asylum-seekers" or "economic migrants".
In the meantime, please refrain from using the misleading term "refugee". - Yours, etc.,
John Ballantine, Ballinteer, Dublin 16.
