Madam, - I note some dated views on the harmful effects of passive smoke attributed to Deputy Finian McGrath (December 13th). I am surprised and indeed disappointed to see the deputy take such a position at this time.

Minister Martin and the Government have rightly responded to proven risks to workers' health. Passive smoke is internationally accepted as a class one cancer-causing carcinogen. It also contributes to cardiovascular disease and has serious implications for all our citizens who suffer from respiratory ailments such as asthma.

The proposed workplace ban on passive smoke will be viewed in time as one of the most important health initiatives ever undertaken by an Irish government. - Yours, etc.,
