Madam, - The Church of Ireland Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, the Right Rev Ken Good, has said he finds it "very difficult" to see how the consecration of Canon Robinson (an openly gay man) "will maintain or further unity in the church" or how it "will uphold the church's discipline... guard its faith... and promote mission" (October 30th).

What is so difficult to understand? The Episcopalian Church in the US does not have "unity" as a priority. It is less concerned about "church discipline", "guarding faith" and "mission" than it is about promoting truth. In this it resembles its founder, Jesus, who did not seek unity with the communion he belonged to. He got into serious trouble for failing to uphold its discipline, guard its faith and promote its mission. . - Yours, etc.,
