Madam, - The decision to entrust a parish in affluent Dublin 4 to Opus Dei seems provocative, for at least two reasons. Some of the most powerful and influential people in Ireland will now come under the direct care of this socially conservative and highly controversial organisation. At the same time, secular clergy who have toiled for a lifetime in difficult parishes will see one of the greener pastures closed off to them. While there is no reward in this world, Merrion Road would be some compensation.
A truer test of the zeal of Opus Dei for pastoral work might have been to entrust to it a parish in the north inner city or the estates of West Dublin. - Yours, etc,
HUGO BRADY BROWN,
