A chara, - I recently applied to Comhairle Contae Chiarraí to renew my ceadúnas tiomána - driving licence. As I prefer using my address as Gaeilge, I requested that attention be paid to inserting the fadas.
My ceadúnas tiomána arrived in due course with an explanatory note stating that the "NVDF computer system's printer does not cater for the fadas". Imagine how disappointed our European neighbours would feel if German official documents arrived without their umlauts or French documents without their accents. Ciarraí was also misspelled as "Ciarra".
Have we any respect for people wishing to use our national language or have I been the victim of a silly Kerryman joke? Mo bhrón, mo bhrón, mo bhrón. Le díomá. - Is mise,
COLM CANTILLON, Cuar Bóthar Ó Thuaigh, Trá Lí, Co Chiarraí.
