Madam, - I thoroughly enjoyed Hugh Oram's Irishman's Diary of September 22nd on Alexander Nimmo's legacy. In addition to the work quoted, Nimmo was also the designer of the very attractive village of Knightstown on Valentia Island, Co Kerry. He was employed by the Knight of Kerry, owner of most of the island, to design and lay out a new village to cater for the export of the slate from the quarry recently opened at Geokaun. The Knight called the village after himself and named one of the streets in tribute to the Duke of Wellington, who he hoped would promote the mine.
It is a pity that so little is known about the personal life of such a talented man. - Yours, etc.,
NELLIE O'CLEIRIGH, Templemore Avenue, Rathgar, Dublin 6.
