Madam, - I was delighted to read that Cork has been labelled a "litter blackspot" (The Irish Times, September 1st), because it's true. The only people ultimately responsible for this label are the people of Cork.
We are a disgustingly lazy, dirty people who regard litter as someone else's problem. The council provide a tiny splattering of public refuse bins which are always brimming with rubbish. Bottle banks and other rare recycling facilities are never emptied.
The best way to increase and publicise this infamous label would be to build a giant incinerator which we could feed like an animal, with more and more of our own and everyone else's rubbish. Then it could spit back out all the toxic dust and ash over the whole county, making us truly the most dirty, poisonous proud county in Ireland. - Yours, etc.,
ROGER ELLIS, Westview, Cobh, Co Cork.
