Sir, - On Sunday evening I took a walk around Inchydoney Island, and would like to thank those visitors over the week-end for the trouble they took to enrich our environment with a huge variety of colourful items, such as crisp packets, ice cream wrappers, plastic bags of every description from every supermarket and cigarette cartons from every corner of the world.
What is perhaps most annoying is that many people clearly do understand the concept of the rubbish bin, but when the bins on the beach are full they simply tip their rubbish nearby, where it will be blown about or torn open, rather than put it in their cars and take it home. Oh yes, and that touching belief some smokers seem to have that their butts and sometimes even their packets don't count as "real" rubbish and can therefore be left anywhere! - Yours, etc.,
Bass Tyrrell, Clonakilty, Co Cork.
