Madam, - I was surprised by John Waters's column of October 20th, as I also attended a Marist Brothers school (Moyle Park College, Clondalkin) in the early 1960s and, contrary to his experience, corporal punishment was practically unknown there. In fact, the brothers were tolerant and liberal; and while demanding high academic standards, they sought to bring out each student's potential.
They also found time to create an awareness of nature and the arts, taking a broader approach to education than was then normal. - Yours, etc.,
