Madam, - The Irish Doctors' Environmental Association unreservedly condemns the decision of the Government to back moves to allow genetically engineered sweetcorn to be imported into the EU (December 9th). There have been no tests carried out on humans to determine the safety of genetically engineered food, and tests on animals have given rise to concern.
Nor is there any system in place to determine whether people may be suffering adverse health effects. We have been told that there are no adverse health effects from genetically engineered food. The truth is that nobody is looking. - Yours, etc.,
ELIZABETH CULLEN (Dr.), Irish Doctors' Environmental Association, Thomastown, Kilcullen, Co Kildare.
