Madam, – Gerard Delamere (August 8th) is rightly concerned about the state of the Magazine Fort in the Phoenix Park.
In the days when we had a Minister for Culture in Michael D Higgins, an attempt was made to convert the fort into a peace and anti-war museum.
Following a commission from the Irish Peace Council, the architect, Adam Hall, designed a complex of buildings inspired by the International Red Cross Red Crescent Museum at Geneva and incorporating looping bridges across Conyngham Road and the River Liffey to link with the war Memorial Gardens.
Unfortunately the proposal was shot down as I understand the fort was required to protect members of the Government in the event of a nuclear fallout. – Yours, etc,
