Madam, - In his otherwise superbly reasoned Irishman's Diary of August 6th, Kevin Myers is mistaken in describing recent attempts to rehabilitate the reputation of Charles Haughey as "surreal".

They are neither surreal nor unexpected. There were always those who pined for their lost leader, and who had never seen anything very wrong with Haughey's behaviour in the first place. They kept this to themselves during the years when such opinions were politically incorrect, but now, sensing that the anger has worn off public opinion, these sneaking regarders are popping their heads back over the parapet to proclaim Haughey's "vision" and "statesmanship". This is all too real, and Mr Myers should brace himself, because there is probably a lot more of it to come. - Yours, etc.,
