Sir, - Frank McDonald's Opinion article (February 12th), on what might be termed a frenzy of land rezoning in the counties surrounding Dublin, is welcome and timely. The greater Dublin region is developing into an American style edge city, without any evidence of accountability by government.
When will the Dublin Regional Authority be given overall planning control with sufficient powers and funding? The taxpayer will be clearly required to fund public service infrastructure (roads drains, utilities) in these rezoned areas. This will reduce taxpayer funds available for the renewal of Dublin city centre and inner city environments and services, such as water mains renewal where leakages of up to 40 per cent of supply cannot be tolerated physically or financially.
Will the leaders of all the political parties, who claim to be in favour of controlling public expenditure, condone this rezoning drift by their silence? - Yours, etc.,
