Sir, - I read with a degree of anger your report of the endorsement deals Nike have entered into with the new US Masters champion Tiger Woods (April 14th). Surely there is something wrong if $40 million can be "bet" on one individual, Tiger Woods, to promote a company which, according to a recent report by Campaign for Labour Rights, pays just 1.60 a day as a basic rate to its factory workers in Vietnam?
Most of these workers are young women from poor rural areas who work for up to 10 or 12 hours a day seven days a week, making sports shoes which reap exorbitant profits for executives such as its CEO Phil Knight, reportedly the sixth richest man in America. Certainly this company can do better. - Yours, etc.,
