Madam, - Niall Greene's assertion (September 27th) that Gerry Adams should not have been categorised as a "party leader" for recent opinion poll purposes is frankly ridiculous.

The fact that Adams is "a member of the suspended Northern Ireland Assembly and an abstentionist member of the UK House of Commons" does not alter the fact that he is president - and leader - of a legally and validly constituted political party in this country.

As it is, Mr Adams must be doing something right, given the current number of sitting Sinn Féin TDs and the fact that Sinn Féin is the fastest growing political party in the State. - Yours, etc.,
