Madam, - In recent weeks we have seen the political representatives of unionism expressing concern regarding republican commitment to the peace process. Perhaps I might be able to reduce their fears on this issue.
On Wednesday, October 29th I met a delegation of Republican ex-prisoners from Coiste na n-Iarchimí. They were speaking on behalf of 15,000 ex-prisoners. We discussed an interactive programme of research, engagement, outreach and articulation predicated upon future visions of society in Ireland.
We further discussed respect for diversity and commitment to justice and peace. They also wanted to initiate contact with the Protestant communities North and South, the unionist community in the North, all churches, political parties in the 26 counties, women, trade unions and the business communities. Above all they were pushing for dialogue. I observed their sincerity about developing peace on the island. They were serious and genuine. Surely it is time now for unionism to meet nationalists half-way.
There was a great sense of hope at that meeting and a great future ahead of us all. Let us get working now on peace, reconciliation and respect for diversity. Then and only then will we all win. - Yours, etc.,
