Madam, - Am I the only one who is bemused by the media's categorisation of Gerry Adams as a "party leader" for the purposes of opinion polling?
Mr Adams is a member of the suspended Northern Ireland Assembly and an abstentionist member of the UK House of Commons - he holds no elective office in the Republic of Ireland. All other leaders of parties in the Republic are members of the Dáil and, unlike Mr Adams, at least in part assessed by the electorate on the basis of their performance in that forum.
Their Sinn Féin equivalent is Deputy Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin, the parliamentary leader of that party in the Dáil. Include him in the next poll, compare like with like and see how he stacks up in public opinion. - Yours, etc.,
