Madam, - What David Marlborough (September 19th) must realise, when criticising Enda Kenny's policy on the re-negotiation of benchmarking, is that Mr Kenny has articulated the growing public anger with this pantomime administration's shambolic economic policy. Benchmarking is another symptom of their bungling.

In the best tradition of the party, Fine Gael has put the country first by encouraging economic discipline, caution and modesty to counter the potentially crippling situation of high inflation, low growth and growing public deficits, which will in the longer-term lead to stagnation and unemployment.

McCreevy and Co have managed to squander the fruits of an economic miracle, moving the country's finances from historic levels of budget surplus to dire economic straits in the space of just five years, despite the repeated warnings from both the OECD and the European Commission . - Yours, etc.,
