A chara, - Your edition of July 10th reported on a cross-border deal whereby 200,000 tonnes of waste glass would be exported to the North. The thrust of the announcement by the Minister for the Environment was that this deal was an achievement.
It is quite beyond comprehension that in this country, where the brain power per hectare exceeds that of most other countries, we still export our problems.
It is particularly disappointing that Mr Cullen does not appear to know that the engineers of Waterford County Council, in his own constituency, have successfully shown the most efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly way of dealing with waste glass. They have incorporated crushed glass into the pavements of their roads.
With the extensive and very expensive motorway programme and other planned county road works, it is now time to consider the 200,000 tonnes of waste glass as a resource to be used in our road pavements to substantially replace the costly crushed stone from the quarries that scar our beautiful countryside. - Is mise,
