Expensive Ireland

Madam, - I thought your readers might like to be aware of currency differences when booking with Stena. I was quoted £84 sterling - or €240! - for the same crossing between Rosslare and Fishguard. Needless to say I booked in sterling.

When I queried the difference I was told it was due to market forces. In other words, charge what you think you can get away with. - Yours, etc.,

Madam, - Recently I went to purchase about €3,000 worth of appliances from a certain electrical store in Dublin. When I queried the increase of €100 on the price of a De Dietrich oven since my previous visit some eight to ten weeks earlier, I was told, "This is Ireland, everything has gone up.".

When the gentleman went on to say that manufacturing costs had gone up, but I informed him that the German economy was in decline. His answer? "The euro makes things even more difficult." I replied that as Germany was in the euro zone, he was just making excuses.

I voted with my feet and went elsewhere to buy the applicances. - Yours, etc.,
