Sir, - The magnificent photographs of Ireland's holy wells (Magazine, November 10th) are truly inspiring, but the sad reality is that this ancient and unique heritage is rapidly disappearing, mainly through neglect, despite the heroic efforts of concerned people in a few areas.

Incalculable damage is also being caused both by urban development and by cattle destroying the vital system of outlet drains and channels through which the well water must flow.

For centuries the Irish people have cared for their holy wells, but the majority are now on farm land and free access is no longer available. In addition, ancient rights of way are not respected, making it almost impossible for people to look after wells in their locality. Unless a solution is found, the holy wells are doomed to extinction.

This seems incongruous when only this week there are reports of fears world-wide that fresh water is running out at an alarming rate and that even here in Ireland, springs that filter through rock to produce the purest of fresh water are being destroyed through ignorance and neglect. This process can still be reversed with careful tending of this precious resource but, as in the past, it requires the loving care of local communities.

A few like-minded people have formed a small group to begin the difficult process of preserving and, if possible, restoring Ireland's holy wells with the help of local communities (and the blessing and guidance of D·chas!)
