Sir, - A bomb exploded on the N11 near Arklow last Monday, resulting in five deaths and several injuries. Bombs are exploding daily all over Ireland, the annual casualty count running at almost 500 dead and several thousand injured.
Where are the security patrols? Where are the peacemakers, the rallies, the expressions of condemnation? Where is the determination to stop this gratuitous civil war. Kevin Myers is outstandingly right: speed kills, everyone knows it but few do anything about it! Not the car manufacturers, the facilitators; not the Government, the vacillators; not the motoring public, the perpetrators.
We bury our dead and the war goes on. A practical suggestion: Why not make available a sticker for the rear window: "I observe speed limits - Do you?" Or one for the dash as a reminder to the driver: "Watch your legal speed". The first would allow law-abiding motorists to proclaim their compliance while possibly challenging or shaming others into doing likewise. The idea could be further developed through media publicity and bill-posting with the intention of promoting careful driving as something "cool" and fashionably desirable. And the cost? How about it, motor insurance industry? - Yours, etc., Harry Shaw,
